Chief Creative Officer & Soul Man
Clint Bryce joined the Cape Town QuirkStation as our first ever Chief Creative Officer in August 2010. He exudes a passion for creativity and shows particular interest when it comes to the art and discipline required to manage it. We’re terribly excited about the contribution he’ll make to our team and look forward to benefitting from his left-of-centre dynamic which promises to be fresh, interesting, unusual and exciting.
Growing up, Superman was Clint’s number 1 hero (he even used to sport “the curl”, compliments of Brylcreem). His obsession with flying left him dreaming of becoming an astronaut (South Africa’s first, to be precise). So, after matriculating from Cambridge High School in East London, Clint headed to Rhodes University where he started a BSc. After accepting that physics was, in fact, not his calling, he turned to Fine Art. Luckily enough, he was able to keep his Maths, Applied Maths and Computer Science subjects with his Fine Art History of Art and Art Theory. Clint then enrolled in the Air Force where he got to live out his passion for flying by spending 18 months flying around SA taking photos and art directing the local Air Force magazine, Ad Astra.
Clint says it was the writing genius of William Gibson’s Johnny Mnemonic which instilled in him a curiosity of the then (not intended) hacker culture and started experimenting with his first Mac whilst working at Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1993. He also discovered some wisdom and inspiration in Mondo 2000: A User’s guide to the New Edge which spoke of the “New World Disorder” and was hooked on “riding the shockwave of the graphics, revolution in art, technology, media, chemistry, science and music”.
He brings a passion for business creativity to the QuirkStation, along with relentless honesty, a collection of awesome t-shirts and an infectious laugh. Clint, known online as CraniumJack, is an avid Star Wars fan and a collector of loads of memorabilia (known to women around the world as toys) which he stores right at the tip-top of his cupboard to avoid the curious little hands of his kids. Although they aren’t allowed to touch Daddy’s toys, Emma (13), Tyler (10), Dune (8) and Jagger (6) are by far Clint’s best start-ups.
His ideal day off would be spent with the family, a picnic lunch and some fishing in Kalk Bay or Rumbly Bay, followed by an evening on the porch with wine and friends. Clint runs his own blog called, The Woodshed which is all about soul, creativity and family. He loves Hayao Miyazaki’s work and also boasts an extensive DVD collection, but considers his most prized possessions to be the original books, scrolls, cloths and tunics that were handed down to him by his Freemason Granddad. His best friend describes him as positive, energetic and childlike (given that he still sees himself as 12, this makes a lot of sense).
Clint also loves the therapeutic and creative element of cooking and can make a killer Jamie Oliver Chicken and Sweet Leek Pie with Flaky Pastry. I think we’ll need proof to believe that (hint, hint).
“Make Meaning!”
