Flash/UI Designer & Developer & Nice Guy 007
Barry Els joined the growing creative team at the Jozi QuirkStation as a Flash/UI Designer and Developer in August 2010. As a kid, he idolised Rambo and dreamt of becoming James Bond-like (a dangerously odd combination). Barry, aka Baz, sports a qualification in Web Design and Development from CTU Training Solutions where he covered courses on Adobe products, PHP, HTML, CSS as well as JavaScript.
He realised he wanted to go digital during his first (and worst) job as a telemarketer, where he used to sketch UIs on post-it notes during calls and was drawn to this life online by the “connectedness” of being a simple click away from friends - no matter where in the world they may be. He also loves the fact that he has access to knowledge and can contribute to the vast Google library.
After spending 3 years in London, Baz settled back in SA and before joining the QuirkStation, spent time perfecting the art of banners at Aqua Online. His mates would describe him as funny, intelligent and literal and he brings a logical point-of-view-thinking-about-user-first-and product-over-process mentality to the QuirkStation.
Barry has an imaginary friend (not weird at all) and loves coding through the night when he’s not watching Heroes or Top Gear. His ideal day would be spent watching movies from the comfort of bed then heading off for some drinks and a chat with his mates (real ones).
Yet another Apple junkie, Barry can’t live without NetNewsWire and Lifehacker. Check out his website and you’ll find he’s pretty much an all-round, talented good guy (just don’t mention the yellow cat suit).
